Day job: Geospatial Programmer/Analyst, Arini Geographics
GIS Focus: Programming, open-source tools, databases
Silas Toms is a Geospatial Programmer and Analyst with Arini Geographics, a GIS services company. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area to start a Masters in GIS at San Francisco State, he has focused on automating geospatial analysis using Python, as well as the use of geodatabases and spatial SQL to replace traditional desktop GIS tools. Comfortable with both ESRI and Open Source geospatial programming, he is most excited about the availability of open source GIS tools that allow anyone to include sophisticated geospatial analysis in both desktop and web-based workflows. He lives in Rockridge after six years in San Francisco, is a big Giants fan, and is excited to help others understand the innovative technologies and skills that make GIS an interesting field for scientists and artists alike.
